There are two places in Iowa City that are noted for their breakfast
offerings. On my only previous visit,
I ate breakfast at the other one and dinner here because it had
"hamburger" in the name. Hamburger Inn #2 was closed briefly during a change in
management, but has been open and operating the same as it ever was for
about a year. Although I breakfasted in Iowa many times in the past, I'd
somehow missed out on having an Iowa omelet. Today was the day.
Sausage, onions, hashbrowns, American cheese.

I also made my second visit to the
Wilton
Candy Kitchen today.
Last time, J.C. and
Abby thought a root beer float was entirely too bland and easily convinced
me to try "the best thing we make", a chocolate & peanut
butter shake. When I told that story to owner Lynn Ochiltree, he said he
thought a chocolate malt was their best offering, then made me an
absolutely delicious root beer float.
I asked about the museum planned for the vacant lot next door, and Lynn said they were still in place, but had been put on hold for a bit as they prepare to move a donated one-room schoolhouse onto part of the lot. |

I heard a train whistle as I paused at a stop sign on the way out of
Wilton, and I'm just not the kind of guy who can resist a snapshot of a
locomotive passing a depot and a patriotically painted rock.

Mike Curtis, whose YouTube videos I mentioned
a few days ago
when I visited Mickey's Dining Car, has long had historic highway maps
available on his 2
Lane Traveler website, and I've used those maps when traveling roads
like the Jefferson Highway and National Old Trails Road. More recently he
has added maps showing locations of diners, lodging, and just generally
cool roadside attractions. This is the first trip on which I made use of
those maps, and this is the first place I've visited purely because it
appears on one of them.
Carl's Ice Cream appears on both Mike's Food and Lodging map and his Roadside Giants & Other Attractions map for obvious reasons. That's a Mark Kline modern muffler man in front of the restaurant. Note that there is both a big guy and a little guy in that first photo. The menu is extensive and I considered having a meal here but it was still pretty early in the afternoon. Probably because of this morning's soda fountain float and yesterday's Blue Bunny flight, I even passed on the hard ice cream Carl's is known for in favor of some Peach Mango frozen yogurt. |

Big Thorn Farm
& Brewery is one of my favorite breweries, and this is my third
time here. It was the first time that a now permanent food truck was open,
and I took advantage of it. The girl apologetically told me that, as the
end of the day neared, most of the items on the menu were gone. But one of
the things that wasn't gone was grilled cheese, and that suited me just
fine. I ordered a sandwich, walked to the Tree Bar to get a Farm Red from
Sarah, then returned to pick up and eat my dinner.
I had assumed I would need to stop for a meal and probably another overnight before ending the trip, but that grilled cheese took care of dinner and let me cruise on home non-stop. |
