I apologize for the lack of audio because you're missing out on the full
effect of David
Schwartz's rock star entrance to the sound of Depeche Mode's version
of "Route 66". Many of David's photographs tell stories all by
themselves and some are used to illustrate stories told by others. Today
he shared some of the stories behind the photos. For this sunset shot,
which has appeared on the cover of Route Magazine, David was
debating whether to get out the tripod to get his rental car in the
picture when two girls appeared driving the exact same car and he got the
shot he wanted. Someone asked David to step in front of the screen for
a photo. Apparently, there were others who thought that was a good idea,
too.

"Culinary History of Route 66" was author Amy Bizzari's topic,
then Jim Featherstone and Olivia Golaszewski tried to make us a little
safer online with "The Secured Road".

Author, historian, preservationist, and all around Route 66 expert John
Weiss kicked off the afternoon sessions with "Illinois Route 66
Preservation Efforts". One of the things he spoke of was the Whoopee
Coaster -- a roller coaster you drive your own car on -- that once
operated on the route. The coaster itself was long gone with no evidence
of its existence outside of people's memories until a lady shared a couple
of her childhood pictures with the Whoopee Coaster in the background.
Those photos led to Shellee Graham producing a T-shirt several years ago.
By coincidence, I had worn my Whoopee shirt so was naturally called upon
to model it. I don't see a big future for me there, but at least I gave it
a shot.
Scott Dahl gave the final presentation of the conference with some pretty involved hints about next year's Miles of Possibility Conference in Springfield, IL. |

With Chery Eichar Jett, the third member of the MoP trio being a little
under the weather and unable to attend, the full reenactment of passing of
the mop history was not possible. There was an abbreviated ceremony, with
the mop ending up in Scott Dahl's hands for next year's conference. It was
noted that this is the first time a male has held this position, but it's
an understanding group. Just do the best you can Scott. Until next year.
