Plans to drive the Yellowstone Trail and Historic US Route 20 in 2020 were sidelined by the COVID pandemic but they survived and were put into play in 2021. The Yellowstone Trail, the longest of America's named auto trails, was driven east to west. Historic Route 20, the longest of the United States Numbered Highways, was driven west to east. A major heatwave in the northwest gave the trip a wider range of temperatures than expected while the variety of surroundings, from cities like Boston and Chicago to open spaces like those in Wyoming and Montana, and roads, from multi-lane expressways to grassy two-tracks, was exactly as expected. The T being traced belonged to the author's great-grandparents, and the tracing is of a trip they made to Florida in 1920. The repeat occurred in the trip's centennial year of 2020. Both involved twelve states and the District of Columbia. The original four month trip was documented in a series of letters, included in this book, sent from the road. The twenty-seven day retracing is documented in approximately 100 photographs augmented by a couple dozen historical photos. Published July 2021. This one is all about the pictures. Each of the travelogues contains in excess of 100 photographs. They exist as full color images in the Kindle versions but are black & white in the paperbacks. The reason is cost. Even mid-level photo quality color printing is expensive. By using an economical magazine format and a limited number of photographs, Six of Each makes several color images available in printed form at a reasonable price. Six photos from each of five travelogues appear one to a page with a short description. Despite being photograph oriented, this is hardly a coffee table book. The Jefferson Highway was an international route with one end in Winnipeg, Canada, and the other in New Orleans, USA. Jefferson Highway All the Way is the story of an end-to-end drive of this historic auto trail in the spring of 2018. A pause at the Jefferson Highway Association annual conference in St. Joseph, MO, divides the trip into two almost equal halves in both time and distance.
