I got a good start on the day with breakfast in the Lafayette's Gun Room.

Then crossed the big river to get wild.

I-77 turned out to be both the fastest and shortest route to my destination. I switched to US-119 at Charleston but even that didn't provide any photo ops. The arch is at the entrance to Chief Logan State Park and the starting point for the Christmas in the Park light display. I thought that perhaps some of the park's residents came out to greet me but soon realized they were too busy eating to even notice my arrival.

Thinking to save the photos for later, I kept the camera down until I reached the end of the unlighted light display then snapped some shots on the scenic drive to the lodge.

My room opens on that top balcony which looks like this and at this.

Inside, the lodge definitely looks ready for Christmas.

I had noticed a museum sign as I drove through the park, and asked about it when I checked in. I learned that it was now open and would remain open throughout the evening while the light display was in progress. I decided to check it out before the big show started then decided to take some daylight pictures of a couple of things I expected to be photographing later on in the dark. The row of signs is in the turnaround area at one end of the light display. The locomotive, C&O 2755, is on one side of the museum and the Chief Logan statue on the other. The statue would not be lit at night so I shot it with and without a backing pyramid.

The attractive park headquarters building also houses the museum. The life-sized photos are explained by a sign on the wall.

As I pulled away from the museum a deer tried to stare me down from the middle of the road. It eventually moved on so maybe I won. I encountered a small group of them a short distance down the road in the other direction. I'm pretty sure one of them would have climbed into the car with me if I'd opened the door.

I headed back to the lodge to await darkness, and, now that I knew what it looked like, was able to pick it out at a distance.

The lights were in the process of coming to life as I drove through them to the park entrance. All photos were taken after I reached the entrance and turned around. A picture of the locomotive that is more similar to the daytime version is here.

Of course, these pictures show only a portion of the full display. Two-plus miles is a lot of lights.
