On the day after Christmas, at least some of the businesses in Geneva (not-on-the-Lake) were operating normally and I got to check out Mary's Diner. I didn't meet the owner, but I did meet the owner's mother which is almost certainly better. Even more impressive, in a negative sort of way, is that I managed to almost completely hide the 1957 Chevy front end built into the counter with my coat. A second location was opened recently with a '55 Chevy front end serving the same purpose. They call what I had Ultimate French Toast. It's made with cinnamon bread. Serving it on a checkerboard rimmed plate and boomerang patterned counter makes it even ultimater.

I'd driven by this drug store a few times in the last couple of days and had thoughts of trying out the soda fountain if I could. If it was returning to regular hours today, it would have opened a few minutes before this picture was taken but I saw no signs of life. That's just as well since I was very much full of Ultimate French Toast.

The preplanned part of this trip ended with last night's dinner but there was a pretty strong maybe on the agenda. I first read about Castle Noel about five years ago and mentally tucked it away as a place I should visit some day. This year it naturally popped up on the Ohio Christmas lists I had seen. I would be in the general area so maybe I could stop in to keep the Christmas theme going another day. I wondered if it would be open immediately after Christmas and checked the website to be certain. In, retrospect, that sure is hilarious.

I drove to Medina and found the Castle. The parking lot was full. A friendly passer-by pointed to another just beyond. I parked and walked back to the Castle where a few small groups stood just outside the door designated for walk-ins. Those with advance reservations had their own door. Inside was full and there was a line of people buying tickets. The people outside and shuffling about the gift shop had tickets in hand and were waiting for their tour to start. Tours departed every seven minutes! I stood in line while just how naive I had been slowly registered. Schools are out. Families are gathered and looking for things to do. Castle Noel is open year round but December 26 just might be its busiest day. If not, it's near the top.

I slipped out of the line and walked up and around the town square. I relaxed and sipped a brew at an inviting pub. When I walked back past the Castle, no one was hanging out by the door. That's when I took the exterior photo. I briefly thought that maybe what I'd seen earlier was merely a spike but a glance inside told me nothing had really changed. I retrieved my car and headed on home. I'm thinking that Castle Noel in July is a much better idea.
